Karen Best Karen Best is director of taxes in Clay Shaw Thomas’ wealth planning team, which focuses on all aspects of tax and national insurance compliance and planning. She joined the firm in 1995 as manager of the taxation department, becoming an associate in 1999 and an equity partner in 2000. After gaining degrees in mathematics and physical education, Karen began her career in taxation with the Inland Revenue in Cardiff in 1985. She subsequently joined KPMG and qualified with both the Association of Taxation Technicians and Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1993. In her role, Karen works directly with owner-managed businesses and wealthy individual clients, to put in place tax planning structures designed to obtain the maximum tax benefit for start-up and growing businesses. She also works with entrepreneur clients on succession planning for tax-efficient retirement and has extensive knowledge of inheritance tax, tax for non-resident and non-domiciled individuals and offshore planning strategies. Karen gains great satisfaction in bringing together the pieces of each client’s personal tax “puzzle” to create solutions and structures that help them achieve their aims and ambitions. She particularly enjoys working with clients through all stages of their business lives, from start-up to successful, financially secure retirement.
